James P. Highland, PhD, MHSA
President
Jim
has a unique background in healthcare finance, insurance, health
economics, and healthcare information systems. His work has focused
on using complex healthcare data, analysis, and model-building to
advise healthcare executives and policy makers in community
healthcare organizations and state governments on strategic
planning, pricing, contracting, and capital budgeting.
Prior to founding Compass in 1997, Jim’s experience
included progressively responsible positions with a large
multi-hospital system, a prominent Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, and
two healthcare consulting firms with national and international
operations. Jim's background includes extensive experience in
the issues facing regulators as well as public and non-profit payers,
particularly the financial aspects of expanding access to health
care. He has done in-depth work on the costs of coverage under
new programs and benefit plans, including assessing health
reform initiatives targeted at expanding affordable coverage,
analyzing health insurance benefit mandates, and projecting the
costs of integrating separate public insurance programs. He
has analyzed, and recommended approaches to, payment systems, incentives,
and capitation and risk management.
Jim holds a Ph.D. in health economics from the
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he also
taught health economics and healthcare financial management.
In addition, he holds a Master of Health Services Administration
from the University of Michigan with concentrations in finance and
information systems, and a B.A., with honors, from Northwestern University.
John C. Kelly, FSA, MAAA
Vice President, Actuarial Consulting
John has an accomplished background as a healthcare
actuary, having held several actuarial positions with national
health insurance companies as well as serving as the director of
actuarial services for a Blue Cross Plan. His experience
includes development of pricing formulas for group and individual
managed care and indemnity products, valuation of claim liabilities,
and general financial management of a group health insurance
business, including financial modeling, forecasting, and analysis.
He also has significant experience with rate filings, rate hearings,
and other aspects of regulatory compliance. John holds an MBA
from the University of Massachusetts and a B.S. in mathematics
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the
American Academy of Actuaries.
Lars Loren
Vice
President / Consulting Manager
Lars is an experienced consultant with broad expertise in
business analysis and decision support processes and systems.
His career - including positions and consulting work with national
firms in a variety of industries -
has provided extensive experience in project management,
quantitative analysis, and data and process design, including work
on decision support, data warehousing, and related systems.
His work in the healthcare industry includes quantitative policy
analysis, project management and analysis for
claim processing and disease management systems, and data warehousing
project management and design. He has participated in all
aspects of this work, from hands-on
analysis and design to consultation with senior managers on system selection
and organizational development. Lars graduated magna cum laude
from Dartmouth College with an A.B. in physics, and holds a J.D.
from Stanford University.
Lisa J. Manderson, ASA, MAAA
Consulting Actuary
Lisa has 20 years of experience as a healthcare
actuary, with progressive responsibilities culminating in the
position of regional valuation director for one of the largest
insurers in the nation. Her work has included a full range of
healthcare actuarial services, including valuation of claim
liabilities, pricing for group, individual and Medicare Supplement
markets, trend analysis, and financial projections. She has
extensive experience in re-engineering and standardizing
actuarial processes, and she has participated directly in
internal and external audits and in examinations by state
regulators. Lisa holds a B.A. in mathematics from the University
of Maine, and is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries and a
Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
Andrea L. Clark, MS
Senior Economist
Andrea is an experienced consultant with expertise in developing and implementing
economic, statistical, and financial analyses in the healthcare field,
including extensive experience designing, managing, and analyzing large,
complex databases. Prior to joining Compass, Andrea was a consulting economist for a Big Five consulting firm,
conducting projects ranging from litigation support for a pharmaceutical firm
to assessing treatment effectiveness for the federal Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration. Andrea is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Georgetown University
with a B.S.F.S. in economics, and holds a
Master of Science in Economics from the University of Wisconsin.
Joshua Roberts
Senior Programmer/Analyst
Josh
is an experienced programmer with expertise in data analysis and
mathematical modeling. At Compass he designs, builds,
and exploits data warehouse solutions for our clients. Josh joined
Compass after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, where he earned a B.S. in economics,
focusing on financial economics and computer science. Prior
to joining Compass, Josh held several internships at MIT and at
Harvard University.
Brock D. Griffin
Programmer/Analyst
Brock provides programming and analytical support
at Compass. He applies his analytical background to a wide
range of tasks including operating and maintaining data warehouse
solutions for our clients, preparing data for actuarial analysis,
and performing general research and quantitative analysis.
Brock joined Compass after graduating from Bowdoin College with an
A.B. in mathematics and economics.
